While attending Buena High School, Officer Katie Hume had an interest in crime scene investigation but decided to take a different route. She attended beauty school and became a licensed esthetician and massage therapist. She was a successful business owner providing skin care and massage services for nearly a decade but still yearned for a career that was challenging and offered something different every day, so she pursued her goal. She entered the police academy in 2016 and became a Ventura Police Officer in 2017.
“I can’t imagine doing any other job and I would not change my decision to switch careers,” she said. “I always feel like I’m learning and the opportunities for the future are endless.”
Here’s what a few of other female officers in Ventura have to say about their job:
“Since I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to become a police officer,” explained Ventura Police Officer Stephanie Lopez. “I made it my goal to make my dream come true. I have been a Ventura Police Officer since 2017. I love my job! I enjoy the people I work with and feel blessed to be able to serve our community every day.”
“What makes the Ventura Police Department unique to me are the people that work here. They are the reason why I wanted to become a police officer,” Officer Gabrielle Root said. “Since being hired, I have been shown so many opportunities this career offers. I’m so fortunate to have people around me that support me, but more importantly push me out of my comfort zone and encourage me to be a better police officer every day.”
“I always liked helping people and found being a police officer is the best way I can do that,” Detective Alyse Quiroz explained. “Every day is different and that keeps this job exciting.”
According to Sergeant Sarah Starr: “There aren’t very many jobs out there that let you do something different every day and challenge you both mentally and physically. Our department is a great place to work especially because of the great group of people I serve alongside. I feel very lucky to have found my career path here at the Ventura Police Department.”
